4-min video: "Eric Sevareid Farewell Nov 30, 1977" - how the News used to be
I remember watching this as it was originally being aired. And I remember Bill Murray's artful impersonation of Sevareid on Saturday Night Live, probably the same week. It was "spot on" and quite funny without demeaning Sevareid and the significance of his retiring from daily broadcasting. (I wish Murray's comedic tribute were on YouTube, but it doesn't appear to be there.)
Today, it's said, Trump's "Fake News Awards" will take place. Was at least some news "fake" in the days of Sevareid and Cronkite? No doubt, as Operation Mockingbird was already underway. Nevertheless, the gravitas of Sevareid, Cronkite, Murrow et al. is worth recalling in this era of "infotainment" and "fake news".
Thanks to YouTuber NorthwestCamera, who explained: "CBS Commentator Eric Sevareid bade farewell to his audience when he retired Nov 30, 1977. This video was rescued from a 3/4" Beta aircheck of the CBS Newsfeed I recorded everyday at 3:30 PST when I produced the 11pm newscast for KOIN-TV in Portland. Sevareid was one of my heroes because he was one of the last class acts of the Murrow era to retire. I recently rescued this video that had been sitting in my attic for all these years, and I thought it appropriate to post it here for a new generation to discover. Enjoy."
