The Purloined Letter from the 15th century which Christopher Columbus declared that Europe discovered America was found in the library of the US Congress and returned to Italy, said on Wednesday the Italian government.

The letter was written by Columbus in 1493 after he agreed to present-day Bahamas. It's addressed to kings of European countries and inform them about the discovery of America. This valuable document was stolen from the library Riccardiana in Florence. The theft remained unnoticed for decades because instead planted a faithful copy of the original.

The letter was then completed in the US and in 1992 was sold at auction for $ 400,000 too small. Unnamed donor, it was later donated to the Library of Congress.

The joint Italian-US investigation began in 2012 and led to the return of the letter to Italy, said on Wednesday at a joint press conference, Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and US Ambassador John Phillips. Department of Italian Carabinieri for art claims that the letter is worth at least a million euros.
