Lionel: "It Was About Race: The OJ Jury Was Hell-Bent on Acquitting Him" [8:52 video (cc)]
Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson, the erstwhile National Football League (NFL) luminary who later became embroiled in legal controversies, has succumbed to cancer at the age of 76. The announcement came from his family, stating that Simpson passed away in Las Vegas, the city where he was receiving treatment for prostate cancer. As a distinguished athlete, Simpson gained fame in the 1970s as a running back for the Buffalo Bills before his life veered into a series of legal and personal upheavals. He is survived by four children from his two marriages.
Simpson's notoriety peaked in the mid-1990s following his arrest for the murders of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The 1994 criminal trial, a media spectacle, ended in his acquittal, a decision facilitated by his defense team, famously dubbed the "Dream Team." This verdict elicited a gamut of reactions across the United States, ranging from outrage to jubilation. Subsequently, in a civil trial, Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Brown and Goldman, resulting in a financial judgment of $33 million against him.
Further legal predicaments ensued, including a 2007 conviction for armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas, which led to Simpson serving a nine-year sentence. He was granted parole in 2017. Throughout these years, Simpson's life and legal encounters were persistently in the media glare, culminating with increased public attention to his health battles leading up to his death. His demise concludes a saga that remained one of the most polarizing and closely watched in recent American history.
