1996 - DAVID SANBORN, "SPOOKY" (Farewell to Buddy Buie)
Wikipedia is reporting the passing of songwriter, producer and publisher, Buddy Buie, on July 18, of a heart attack, age unknown. Buie is perhaps most well-known for his work with Roy Orbison, The Classics IV, and Atlanta Rhythm Section. Wikipedia says:
He is most well known as a prolific song-writer, with 340 songs registered in the Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) catalog. In fact, Buie's "Traces" (performed by The Classics IV) was at one point the 34th Most Performed Song in BMI History. Buie's truly literary lyrics blend seamlessly with the music, with clear, sustained imagery, classic themes, poetic motifs, and a pithy, concise wit that is often lacking in the work of peers.
Below, from his 1996 album, "Songs from the Night Before", saxophonist David Sanborn performs "Spooky", popularized by The Classics IV. The tune was originally an instrumental song, performed by saxophonist Mike Sharpe. The Classics IV version, with lyrics added by produced Buddy Buie and guitarist James Cobb, went to #3 on the Hot 100 chart in 1968.
