Hi, Folks -

A gentleman named Galen Winsor was making the rounds in the 1980s, explaining that in his experience and belief, nuclear "stuff" was not harmful to us. Our fear of it, he said, was the result of a conscious PR campaign with purposes not obvious to us.

Among other things, he said, nuclear waste is useful and can be very, very profitable - so much so that they wanted us to believe it's a serious disposal problem and not something valuable that ne'er-do-wells might try to steal - so it's best to keep them afraid to go near it.

Winsor was saying things totally counter to what we all believed at the time, so of course there were people saying he was a quack or scam artist of some kind. Here are some related posts from the RMN Archive:

Mr. Winsor has passed on now, we're told, but interestingly here's a tweet that just popped up that could validate some of what Winsor was saying that seemed so unlikely at the time:
