Ignoring strident public opposition, the ruling parties intend to seek Lower House passage this week of a package of security bills that would significantly expand the overseas role of the Self-Defense Forces.

The proposed legislation will be put to a vote at a special committee on July 15 so that it can be adopted at a full plenary session of the chamber later in the week, Sadakazu Tanigaki, secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party, said.

...Public opinion polls conducted by the media organizations in June and July show that the security package is hugely unpopular.

A poll by Kyodo News on June 20 and 21 showed that 58.7 percent of respondents were opposed to the bills, while 27.8 percent said they supported the legislation.

A Mainichi Shimbun poll on July 4 and 5 also showed that 58 percent were opposed, while a survey conducted by The Asahi Shimbun on July 11 and 12 showed 56 percent were against the legislation.
