The Spanish Inquisition, a war against the individuals, is generally listed as from 1478–1834, the double threat of religion and government, church and state repression.

If you think the Salem Witch Trials were something, consider the hundred and fifty thousand or so persons who were slaughtered during The Spanish Inquisition. Those victims, including some Christians, were not affforded the luxury or right to hold their own beliefs or belief system unless it was under the church-state doctrines. This was a case beyond that of condemnation over being a 'bad person', a witch. It was a case of condemnation due to refusing to relent to church-state control.

Since those times the Spanish and Spain have suffered a world of bad press and curses, depicted as cruel, barbaric and murderous. Spaniards in America were characterized as cruel invaders who fed the Indians to blood-thirsty dogs, something which might have actually happened. Also see: Black Legend
