SARAJEVO - The tragic death of the boy Mahir Rakovac (14) who in Sarajevo committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of the building where he lived has become a first-rate theme of the Bosnian public and media at the initiative of his parents who are now asking authorities to take measures that will finally face all the more widespread the problem of bullying.
"Suicide of 14-year-olds must be explained", "Thousands of citizens have signed a petition against violence" these are just some of the headlines in the local press Tuesday.
The boy committed suicide on 14 December by jumping from a window after he previously burned backpack with school books and this tragedy become of considerable interest to the general public after his stepfather Dubravko Lovrenović, history professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, and then his mother Alisa Mahmoudi, a professor at the University of Zenica spoke to public.
The boy's stepfather stated to the public a direct and open accusations of the International Ilidža primary school in Sarajevo that was attended by Mahir two years until June 2015.
Lovrenović said that the boy had been exposed to brutal bullying and that he was there actually raped.
"How do you explain that Mahir was raped by his peers and that the girls all looked at that only asking "do you guys enjoy," said Lovrenović in front of television cameras.
The stepdad claimed that teachers and school administration all knew but about that but did nothing to punish the perpetrators and help the child whose parents last year have transferred to another school.
"This (international) school must urgently be closed as to anyone else could happen something like that," said Lovrenović.
The boy's mother in a shocking letter sent to the media, the public and the authorities stated that the International Primary School in Ilidža really is a confluence of children of newly composed social elite who with arrogance overnight acquired wealth imposes its own rules and brutally trampled anyone who does not fit into them.
"Mahir had lost all hope because he was betrayed several times. On one side by his comrades on the other side by those who first had to protect him, if nothing else, then because it was their legal obligation. However, this school in system of BiH, like most of the private schools after the war, regardless of the formal customs, is essentially ex-territorial. In them, perhaps after some time, to enter will be only possible with a visa and passport, "wrote Alice Mahmoudi.
The school she is talking about is actually a private part of a system of about 350 Turkish educational institutions established around the world.
From school they acted only on Monday and that by unsigned statement in which they state that none of their "participants in the educational process" did know that Mahir had a problem.
They stressed that the school is staffed by trained counselors and teachers and that the authorities are invited to explore all with the message that all of them are fully available. Stepfather and mother of tragically deceased boy decided to "flush out" the case to the end so they filed a report within the police and the Prosecutor's Office of Sarajevo Canton.
"We will determine whether it was a criminal offense here. We'll follow through on this to the end and shed light on this case," said chief county prosecutor Dalida Burzić.
The case of Mahir Rakovac after public pressure forced for action also the Ministry of Education of Sarajevo Canton.
Minister Elvir Kazazović confirmed for "Oslobođenje" that he immediately ordered an extraordinary inspection of the International Primary School in Ilidža.
He denied allegations that it operates outside of BiH.
"That's not true. The Ministry has the power and controls private schools," said Kazazović explaining how they are currently checking in particular qualifications and professional skills of employees in a former school Mahir Rakovca.
The Ministry of Education of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina are reminded that under the Constitution and the laws they have no authority in this case because education is actually left to the counties within that entity.
"This event is something horrible. It is about a child in primary school," said Federal Minister of Education Edina Dlberović stressing that is lightly passed over the fact that there are more children in schools who are exposed to various forms of violence and that they simply do not notice or is not taken into account.
According to available research results even up to 43 per cent of children in primary schools in the country had experienced a kind of bullying and the same kind of experience does and 29 percent of high school students.
Suicide, 14-year-old boy has encouraged many public reactions in BiH.
On the social network group called "Justice for Mahir" has gathered thousands of members who seek the introduction of stricter laws to sanction bullying in schools and initiated the signing of a number of public petitions seeking urgent reaction of the legislature.
