James Gunn was fired by Disney today, over the body of tweets Mike Cernovich had tweeted about last night. Gunn says those tweets, posted 2008-2011, are from his earlier days and were intended as deliberately edgy and outrageous jokes. (He deleted about 10,000 of those tweets, last night.)

Twitter users appear divided on this, some arguing that no one should be fired because of tweets made seven years ago, and some arguing their concern that there's more to this than "just jokes".

James Gunn has been fired as the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” after a series of offensive tweets were unearthed that made light of such controversial topics as pedophelia [sic] and rape. Disney, the studio behind the comic-book franchise, made the announcement in the midst of Comic-Con, the geek convention where Gunn is beloved for his horror work in films such as “Slither” and for the irreverent take he applied to the superhero genre in the first “Guardians” and its sequel.
