The following message contains numerous references to the works of Nostradamus, i.e., Michel de Nostredame, the French physician & astrologer, a Christian convert from a Jewish family which was said to belong to the Tribe of Issachar. Some comments follow:

: a number of prophecies, actually creating synergies between
: some prophecies that have only become obvious in the past few

: First, the Nostradamus prophecy that clearly describes a large

: comet or similar object hitting or coming close to Earth.

There are six quatrains from the Centuries which pertain directly to comets. Century X, Number 72 does not specifically mention this astronomical phenomena.

: Rather than pieces of 76P heading into the Earth's path, could it not be the moon Phobos? Nostradamus describes his 'comet' as the King of Terror.

This is a highly speculative reading based on the assumption that "Phobos means fear or terror in Greek, in addition to which, Phobos in Greek mythology was the son of the war god Ares, and therefore royal, a real king."

The original text uses the phrase "un grand Roi d'effrayeur" with the Old French meaning of "terror" applied to that last word.

The next line in that quatrain indicates something even more incredible than is usual for the great visionary, wherein this King of Terror who comes from the sky will bring back to life the great King -- in a typical Nostradamian anagram, "d'Angolmois," which has long been thought to mean "Mongolois" or Mongols.

The first line of this quatrain is the one that names the year 1999, seventh month, while the last line reads (according to Edgar Leoni, one of the great scholars of the Centuries) --

"Before and after Mars to reign by good luck."

: Phobos is also incredibly unstable in its orbit of Mars,
: requiring comparatively small effort to push it out of orbit
: completely. It doesn't seem all that far-fetched that 76P
: could provide the catalyst for Phobos to be set free.

Years ago, a writer whose identity escapes me at the present hour postulated that Deimos was an asteroid captured by Mars, but that Phobos had to be hollow because of its peculiar reflectivity and its "unstable" behavior in orbit. Conspiracy theorists will note that the interactive game "Doom" -- which played a prominent role in the mental disintegration of the Columbine High School killers apparently begins with an expedition to explore these two moons.

Doom afficiandoes are welcome to correct me or elaborate on that.

: But what if Nostradamus 'knew' with his second sight that Mars
: had moons?

There is no indication in his Centuries or his Presages that he had this kind of knowledge. It is not impossible, though, that he encountered books so ancient that they may have been written when there was knowledge of the make-up the solar system that now parallels what we know. Clear mountain air and the right lenses could yield such information, which would then become highly useful to any astrologer seeking to assuage a militant King.

: Counting moons, one could in fact say that
: Phobos itself is both the 7th rock from the sun, and the
: named King of Terror.

This simply doesn't compute.

: Astologers say that the effects of eclipses and other major
: occurrances can be felt a month to the day after the event
: itself, with a three day either side window. How
: significant then that the flyby of 76P was slated for 5th
: June? In addition, the events that transpire at such times
: are not assumed to be the 'main event', but rather the
: 'birth' of a future event. An astrologer would tell us to
: look back to the 5th June (or three days either side) to
: find the event that started it all.

That is a lot of latitude. Progressive astrology requires more exacting calculations and is not a guessing game.

: Also, in July, a never-before-heard-of occurrence will be the
: fact of three eclipses in the same month. Again, eclipses
: are meant to speed things up in astrological terms, so that
: we reach the next level more quickly.

That is also purely speculative. I have never heard this kind of interpretation for an eclipse before.

: So, from an astrological perspective, it looks like things may start happening in July. So could it be that 76P passed Mars, and caused Phobos to become even more unstable, to a point where, in the course of the next ten days or so, it finally breaks free of its Mars orbit?

Even if Phobos is hollow, it would require a massive object, one which is generating a significant gravitational "pull," to bring whatever Phobos really is OUT of its orbit and sending it spinning along towards either the Earth, our Moon, or our general vicinity. If Phobos is hollow, it will probably produce more "terror" than ultra high tides, but no celestial body of its size, hollow or not, can come close to this planet and not affect us all dramatically.

: If that is the case, does anyone out there have
: a clue how long it would take Phobos and Earth to reach the
: same point in space?

That would be dependent on what amount of momentum it picked up when it was -- supposedly -- knocked out of Mars' orbit. A cue ball hit softly will roll slowly. One hit sharply will move fast and impact whatever it hits with much greater energy.

The most important quatrain concerning comets, for these modern times, would be Century VI, number 6, wherein "the bearded star" appears not far from Cancer --

"The great one of Rome will die, the night over."

This quatrain seems to be linked to VI, number 5: "The Celtic river will change its course". Nostradamus gives that event the astrological clues of Saturn, Leo and "Mars, Cancer in plunder."

These two quatrains can also be placed in the context of a new European war, where "the united brothers" vex an alliance consisting of Norway, Britain, and Romania, while defeating a "Roman chief from Gallic blood". This same chief will face a multi-national army or "a great throng" assembled somewhere in the Pyrenees. Now that should give us all a little something interesting to mull over!
