On Wednesday, Senator Jesse Helms had Congress Woman Lynn Woolsey, several other Congress Women and their supporters forcibly removed from the Senate floor. Congress Woman Woolsey attempted to deliver a U.N. Treaty for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, that had been signed by over 100 Congressional members. Congress Woman Woolsey has been attempting to deliver this treaty to Jesse Helms ( who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee )for over 5 years to no avail. He has managed to elude every attempt. When Congress Woman Woolsey thought she finally had him in a place where she could hand him the treaty, Helms played his trump card. He called the Capitol Police ( they are actually a private force and not part of the Washington D.C. Police Dept. ) and had Congress Woman Woolsey, other Congress Women and their supporters physically thrown out of the Senate Room. All in order to avoid recognizing and receiving a treaty to grant women immunity from discrimination. Helms' actions are an outrageous abuse of power and should be morally repugnant to every person in this country. Worse still is the fact that the Senate actually stood by without objection while this action took place. Further more the three television Network News programs did not even bother to report the incident. I urge everyone to send letters of complaint to the Senate and Network News programs.
